LUXEMBOURG, February 15, 2001 - SBS Broadcasting SA (NASDAQ: SBTV; Amsterdam Stock Exchange (AEX): SBS) announced today that it has been granted 15 new frequencies by the Finland Government, under its current licence to operate KISS FM, a national station, in Finland. The frequencies increase KISS FM’s national coverage area by 16 percent, to a total national reach of 3.6 million people or 69 percent of the population, including all of Finland’s urban areas.
In addition, SBS was granted a new local radio licence for the regional city of Jyvaskyla. The Company currently owns local radio stations in the major metropolitan and regional cities of Helsinki, Turku, Tampere and Oulu, and operates them as a marketing duopoly with KISS FM. The Jyvaskyla licence expands SBS’s local station group to seven stations and further consolidates its national sales duopoly with KISS FM in Finland’s key urban areas. The duopoly dominates Finland’s 15-to-44-year old demographic and is the largest radio station group in Finland measured in combined reach.
Commenting on the news, Harry Evans Sloan, Chairman and CEO of SBS, said: "Since launching KISS FM in 1995 SBS management has expanded its reach by over 150 percent. With the granting of these additional frequencies, we have completed the build-out of KISS FM to all of Finland’s major regions. These additional frequencies will enable us to attract national advertisers, expand our local station duopoly and add almost a half million potential listeners.
"At SBS, we are committed to a growth strategy, which continues to focus on the expansion of our radio division. Our 21 stations, most of which are market leaders, serve five countries and are an integral part of our substantial Pan-European, multi-media presence. Net advertising expenditures in our markets now exceed $3 billion."
KISS FM is Finland’s leading contemporary hit radio music station targeting the 15-to-35-year old group, reaching all of Finland’s major regions, including every city with a population in excess of 40,000 people. KISS FM has over 1 million weekly listeners and is second in national reach to Nova, Finland’s only national commercial radio station. KISS.FI, the website of SBS' radio station KISS FM, is the number one site in Finland in the 15-to-35 year old group.
